Gilgamesh appeared as a villain in the anime Fate Stay Night. Many might hate him for ruining or attempting to ruin the life of the protagonists. However in my case, I hated the main guy protagonist, Shirou. I don’t like him and I don’t think he deserves Saber and Saber’s love. This post is about Gilgamesh and Saber but before I proceed, let me first explain why I hate Shirou so much.
I have three reasons. First of all, the way he stops Saber from fighting and telling her things like she’s a girl and it’s not right for a girl to fight is very insulting in my opinion. Girls and Boys are supposed to be treated equally, and what he’s doing is absolutely gender discrimination, and to think that he’s a very very very very very very very weak. How would he survive or rather, how would Saber survive if she relies on him?? Second, his idealistic thinking of SAVING EVERYONE, duh! And I mean DUH!! How can he save everyone when he cannot even save his own self!? Saying stupid things like “
me call “lame, useless, boring, etc.”, he’s a very arrogant person, thinking that he can save everyone and he’s so not good looking. Saber doesn’t deserve someone like him. *pants* Sorry to SaberxShirou fans, this is just my personal opinion anyway, I’m really sorry for the rants.
Ok, now why do I like the pair Saber and Gilgamesh? This pairing is actually not just based on looks, in all honesty. I didn’t think Gilgamesh was handsome on his first appearances, I mean compared to my dear Archer. The thing that struck me the most is his dedication to making Saber his. Ok, before you tell me that he’s not a gentleman, he doesn’t respect women or he’s very selfish, hear my reason XD. Gilgamesh is as he explained—the first hero. He is the King who had everything, that explains the infinite number of weapons he has on hand. The reason of the way he forces
Saber to be his could be because of this detail. He is used to having everything that he desires on his grasp and he probably didn’t know how to express his feeling well that’s why he had assumed violence. Even though he practically stabbed Saber a couple of times, fought her with all his might, he didn’t want her to die or disappear. Remember when he said he wouldn’t kill Shirou because if he dies, Saber will also disappear. He is also well aware that Saber is a powerful servant and a King. He did not underestimate her, unlike a certain someone who talks big for someone so weak. Also, notice that he was actually happy when he was fighting Saber. I’d say, her very presence makes him happy. As I
have mentioned, he just doesn’t know how to express himself well. But it’s obvious that he really likes Saber, I’d even say he loves her. I love it when he tells others not to touch Saber because she is his. And when he mentioned something like “As expected from the girl I laid my eyes on” or something like that. One more thing, on the last episode, when Saber won, he touched her face before he disappeared and said that he forgave her. That he’s not angry because he lost to her. He was actually smiling, perhaps happy that the one who won against him is the woman he loves.
Gilgamesh and Saber is the best pair in Fate Stay Night in my opinion. And if only, IF ONLY Shirou wasn’t in the picture and Saber had said yes to the proposal he made (and I mean the wedding proposal where in he mentioned something like “Let’s get engaged while you’re still sane”) Things could have turned out beautifully. Don’t get me wrong, the ending of Fate is nice, but it could have turned out much better.

I like Saber-Gil more than Saber-Shirou.I know the game.That Shirou actually love the others girls-Rin and Sakura-in Unlimited Blades Works and Heaven Feel. But Gil alway love Saber in all 3 routes. He's ways better than Shirou !!!

Umm...You do know that Archer's the adult version of Shirou right? It's not like I really support Saber and Gilgamesh or Shirour and saber, but looks aren't everything you know. Besides, if you're saying that it's stupid that Shirou's always trying to save people, then you're basically saying that Saber's stupid too. Avalon wasn't the only reason that Shirou could summon Saber. They are both alike. During her life as king, Saber thought only to protect her people and nothing else. The anime version sucks compared to the visual novel anyways, and they made Shirou's head too big in the anime version lol. The thing that annoys me the most is when people don't even know what they're talking about, and they start complaining about things. Play the visual novel, before you say anymore. Besides, in Unlimited Blade Works, Shirou owned Gilgamesh. (Cut his arm off) I'm joking, he seriously did! lol and, I know that I shouldn't make a big fuss over this whole thing, (Though you're doing it right now, so I guess it doesn't matter.) but do you really want to do that Saber? Just like Gia said, she rejected him. Besides, do you really think that she would get along with Gilgamesh? Just think of what a disaster it would be, because if you honestly think that they're going to get along, then the Gilgamesh and Saber in your mind must have a completely different personality.

well, I AGREE that Shirou is discriminating a gender or what he's doing is gender descrimination. I agree, understand & respect your point of view. But if you'll turn on the other way around, SHIROU IS JUST SHOWING his "GENTLEMAN" side. *smiles* or to put it simply, Shirou is being a gentleman. :D
I don't care about the pairings actually. If Saber wants Shirou, then FINE. Same case on the GilgameshXSaber pairing. As long as Saber is happy then it's fine with me. *smiles*
But on my opinion, SaberXGilgamesh isn't a bad pairing at all. Actually I blushed on the last episode, where Gilgamesh touched Saber's face. But 'ANONYMOUS' was right. IT WOULD BE A DISASTER if Saber will end up with Gilgamesh. SHE CLEARLY REJECTED GILGAMESH (ouch! it hurts on Gilgamesh's side. or maybe IF I WERE GILGAMESH.) I think if Saber loves Shirou, then Saber should end up with Shirou. BUT, I HATE SHIROU on the 1st few episodes of the anime. BUT WHEN I KNEW ARCHER was the future SHIROU, it seems like I am impressed w/ SHIROU (ARCHER IS SOOO COOL!). And "anonymous" was right, Shirou isn't that weak. He has some guts & potentials. But Shirou wasn't that handsome & Shirou wasn not my "IDEAL HEROINE".

yupp, definitely agree with you. i was one of the few who realize shirou isnt good enough for saber, and it was really sad that saber didnt realize gil loved her so much. i really didnt see gil was a villain, i dont think he was trying to oppose the protagonist. i only see him as a person, a man, who looking and pursuing his love. and further more i think gil participate the holy grail war was because he simply wants to meet saber. i wish the ending was better, like saber finally realize gil loved her so much, and they became a pair of happily ever after.

Secondly, I do think Saber would be happier with Shirou and she admits her love to him and she often thought about him and just as another comment says, the two arent that different, they want to save people.
Gilgamesh and Saber could be a nice couple in peoples dreams. xD They really realistically wouldnt end up together but its a nice thought for Saber-Gilgamesh fans.
Overall I just think its okay whoever she chose because.. well. Its an anime show. They're not real. but its a lovely idea. xD

I can understand the part about gender discrimination but everything else no just no. I mean you can't just say someone is stupid for what they belive in. Then the part about looks/character Thats just an opinion of what you think but look at it in another point of view like Saber's. Their ideals are similair on how they want to help others so they would get along better. Then for looks most of you go aww over the part where Gilgamesh lets his hair down. To the guy said that "Just think of what a disaster it would be" well actually you got that all wrong, you see if you remember on the anime version of fate stay night of what gilgamesh said on saber that all thanks to her, that during on the previous grail war or on the fourth holy grail war when saber uses excalibur on the HG or Holy Grail and when the holy grail was cutted in half, all of its evil content had spilled on gilgamesh, losing his sanity as an epic hero. At the time on the fifth holy grail war both of them meet each other again for the so called "re-uniting" union to be made, and of course if you remember of what gilgamesh said on saber when they defeat caster and her master and see each other again gilgamesh said "Oh, how silly of you for making a man like me wait, and have that answer from ten years ago, we shall meet again". If kiritsugu didn't ordered saber to destroy the HG, gilgamesh wouldn't be a problem to deal with. Of course I totally agree on PIPAN because of his explaination of why he didn't like shirou and why should gilgamesh and saber be the couple to be with, it's a good explaination really good job dude.
I liked you arguments and I agree with you; Shirou sucks =/ I played the novel, and even tough he gets stronger in other scenarios I STILL don't think he's a good character.
Also, Kinoko Nasu (the writter of the novel) said himself that Shirou's true love is Sakura not Saber.

I've found out that my significant other has a warrior quality in her. As a beginner, she could shoot two bull's eye out of three shots (yes, she's an archer).
And as for her, I also felt the same thing like Gilgamesh had felt, 'some things are very beautiful for the very reason that they're unobtainable', although I won't fight her.
I hope his boyfriend (recently she went out with someone other) won't treat her like Shirou treated Saber.
So what if Gil mistreats Saber? anyway, he´s a villain, would you expect him to be cute and sweet? she never gave him a chance either, she could have talked to him instead of fighting. and besides all that i just have one thing to say: Shirou fails as main guy. It was the first time i saw a main guy so boring. Even Sakura was less boring than him. So, Gilgamesh at least gives us some action and god, he´s HOT:D

I hated Shirou right from the Start(who cares if he is archer now, and besides Archer lost his memory when being summoned by Rin, if he does remember a thing he wouldn't such an awesome guy now would he ^^) Still Saber rejected him because she has Shirou now, but if Shirou wasn't in the picture they make a cute couple :) Its just personal opinion though, Shirou never thinks about how other people feel, he just don't want them to be hurt or etc but never consider their feelings at all. Thats why Saber was furious when he keep telling not to fight (DISCRIMINATION! He means that girls can't fight, wthell....==)

Gilgamesh haters...ok, here it goes: Gil might be a villain and be stupid most of times, but honestly shirou is worse. Besides Shirou is a womanizer: As Archer he chases after Rin, as Shirou he chases after Saber, but the author said, in fact he loves Sakura. so, does he want his personal harem? At least Gil only loved saber and really wanted her to marry him. I believe if Saber gave him a chance, he would have become a different person.
and p.s- Shirou is just envious of Gil. When he became Archer, he changed his hair to look like Gil´s and even his "a thousand swords" power is like a copy paste of Gil´s power.

Shirouxsaber doesn't work at all. He ruined sabers character. Saber was so much better in the other routes where shirou doesn't love her. SaberxGil is so much better then ShirouxSaber. Atleast there both heroes.

Which is basically everything. There's really no love involved in it. If you saw Gil's ending in Fate/Unlimited Codes, you'd know. And besides, Saber doesn't even like Gilgamesh. At all...
Please don't base all your evidence on the anime. Because that's stupid. There's tons of material you'd have to read first in order to truly understand their characters. Fate/Zero and the actual Fate/Stay Night VN, for example.

You probably shouldn't use Zero to prove your point, because Zero contradicts it. In fact the pairing has actually picked up some more fans because of it. The reason Gilgamesh is attracted to her is specifically because she represents everything that humanity SHOULD be. He even tells Kirei as much after the Feast of Kings where he learned Saber's intentions: that he likes "arrogant opponents" who seek to become more than human, those who have a wish that is too great for a human to achieve. That is, in essence, what it means to be great enough to become a Heroic Spirit in Gil's eyes, since he is the first human to have done so. Humanity, to Gil, is at its best and most beautiful when it's struggling against impossible odds. That she refuses him is just an added bonus that reinforces his admiration of her strength (to resist even the King of Heroes) and purity (to refuse offers of infinite wealth).
There's really no love involved in it.
Zero contradicts this as well. It's stated that she is "the only woman he has ever truly loved". The problem is that he's buried his original nobility so thoroughly underneath layers of hedonism, tyranny, and materialism that what feelings he might have have been twisted into lust for her. Why he does this isn't clear, but what is apparent is that there is indeed some genuine affection, but it's perverted into lust due to his greed.
Sure, the pairing wouldn't happen in canon (since this is what was originally a porn game we're discussing, so the only one allowed to score any tail is the player avatar protagonist) but it's not all that unusual for such a dynamic, interesting pairing to earn some fans. (Especially those who are bored with the usual harem comedy shonentard main character crap) With a few tweaks and some overcoming of personal flaws/hangups, it might work in a different setting.
You should check out Carnival Phantasm episode 8. Gilgamesh must have a thing for being dominated...maybe that's a little overboard...let's say "bossed around" by Saber. Although you might not like the end of the episode very much, the Gilgamesh-Saber scenes are worth watching~
WOW!, finally i found ppl who understands my feelings about shirou being the worst main character ever! I swear the anime Fate/stay night would of been wayyyyyy better wifout him, my god... his idealistic logic of "saving everyone without sacrificing anyone" even archer got pissed off at himself lol ._. I totally support Saber x Gilgamesh, true dat gilgamesh can b a dick at times but hes like any other pampered prince who thinks hes the greatest but there usually is one person who teaches him about the value of life. If Shirou wasn't in the picture and Saber got together wif Gilgamesh, im 90% sure Saber would b able to turn his arrogant boasting attitude into a person who treats others wif respect or "turn him into a tsundere :P"

Honestly speaking when gilgamesh was about to dissapear it broke my heart.coz he'z eyes were so perfectly saying that he loves saber so much (-_-) it didn't make me so sad to have the episode end,but to have it end this way...boohoo :'(
