Gilgamesh appeared as a villain in the anime Fate Stay Night. Many might hate him for ruining or attempting to ruin the life of the protagonists. However in my case, I hated the main guy protagonist, Shirou. I don’t like him and I don’t think he deserves Saber and Saber’s love. This post is about Gilgamesh and Saber but before I proceed, let me first explain why I hate Shirou so much.
I have three reasons. First of all, the way he stops Saber from fighting and telling her things like she’s a girl and it’s not right for a girl to fight is very insulting in my opinion. Girls and Boys are supposed to be treated equally, and what he’s doing is absolutely gender discrimination, and to think that he’s a very very very very very very very weak. How would he survive or rather, how would Saber survive if she relies on him?? Second, his idealistic thinking of SAVING EVERYONE, duh! And I mean DUH!! How can he save everyone when he cannot even save his own self!? Saying stupid things like “
me call “lame, useless, boring, etc.”, he’s a very arrogant person, thinking that he can save everyone and he’s so not good looking. Saber doesn’t deserve someone like him. *pants* Sorry to SaberxShirou fans, this is just my personal opinion anyway, I’m really sorry for the rants.
Ok, now why do I like the pair Saber and Gilgamesh? This pairing is actually not just based on looks, in all honesty. I didn’t think Gilgamesh was handsome on his first appearances, I mean compared to my dear Archer. The thing that struck me the most is his dedication to making Saber his. Ok, before you tell me that he’s not a gentleman, he doesn’t respect women or he’s very selfish, hear my reason XD. Gilgamesh is as he explained—the first hero. He is the King who had everything, that explains the infinite number of weapons he has on hand. The reason of the way he forces
Saber to be his could be because of this detail. He is used to having everything that he desires on his grasp and he probably didn’t know how to express his feeling well that’s why he had assumed violence. Even though he practically stabbed Saber a couple of times, fought her with all his might, he didn’t want her to die or disappear. Remember when he said he wouldn’t kill Shirou because if he dies, Saber will also disappear. He is also well aware that Saber is a powerful servant and a King. He did not underestimate her, unlike a certain someone who talks big for someone so weak. Also, notice that he was actually happy when he was fighting Saber. I’d say, her very presence makes him happy. As I
have mentioned, he just doesn’t know how to express himself well. But it’s obvious that he really likes Saber, I’d even say he loves her. I love it when he tells others not to touch Saber because she is his. And when he mentioned something like “As expected from the girl I laid my eyes on” or something like that. One more thing, on the last episode, when Saber won, he touched her face before he disappeared and said that he forgave her. That he’s not angry because he lost to her. He was actually smiling, perhaps happy that the one who won against him is the woman he loves.
Gilgamesh and Saber is the best pair in Fate Stay Night in my opinion. And if only, IF ONLY Shirou wasn’t in the picture and Saber had said yes to the proposal he made (and I mean the wedding proposal where in he mentioned something like “Let’s get engaged while you’re still sane”) Things could have turned out beautifully. Don’t get me wrong, the ending of Fate is nice, but it could have turned out much better.

I like Saber-Gil more than Saber-Shirou.I know the game.That Shirou actually love the others girls-Rin and Sakura-in Unlimited Blades Works and Heaven Feel. But Gil alway love Saber in all 3 routes. He's ways better than Shirou !!!

Umm...You do know that Archer's the adult version of Shirou right? It's not like I really support Saber and Gilgamesh or Shirour and saber, but looks aren't everything you know. Besides, if you're saying that it's stupid that Shirou's always trying to save people, then you're basically saying that Saber's stupid too. Avalon wasn't the only reason that Shirou could summon Saber. They are both alike. During her life as king, Saber thought only to protect her people and nothing else. The anime version sucks compared to the visual novel anyways, and they made Shirou's head too big in the anime version lol. The thing that annoys me the most is when people don't even know what they're talking about, and they start complaining about things. Play the visual novel, before you say anymore. Besides, in Unlimited Blade Works, Shirou owned Gilgamesh. yupp, definitely agree with you. i was one of the few who realize shirou isnt good enough for saber, and it was really sad that saber didnt realize gil loved her so much. i really didnt see gil was a villain, i dont think he was trying to oppose the protagonist. i only see him as a person, a man, who looking and pursuing his love. and further more i think gil participate the holy grail war was because he simply wants to meet saber. i wish the ending was better, like saber finally realize gil loved her so much, and they became a pair of happily ever after.

At the time on the fifth holy grail war both of them meet each other again for the so called "re-uniting" union to be made, and of course if you remember of what gilgamesh said on saber when they defeat caster and her master and see each other again gilgamesh said "Oh, how silly of you for making a man like me wait, and have that answer from ten years ago, we shall meet again". If kiritsugu didn't ordered saber to destroy the HG, gilgamesh wouldn't be a problem to deal with. Of course I totally agree on PIPAN because of his explaination of why he didn't like shirou and why should gilgamesh and saber be the couple to be with, it's a good explaination really good job dude.
I liked you arguments and I agree with you; Shirou sucks =/ I played the novel, and even tough he gets stronger in other scenarios I STILL don't think he's a good character.
Also, Kinoko Nasu (the writter of the novel) said himself that Shirou's true love is Sakura not Saber.

I've found out that my significant other has a warrior quality in her. As a beginner, she could shoot two bull's eye out of three shots (yes, she's an archer).
And as for her, I also felt the same thing like Gilgamesh had felt, 'some things are very beautiful for the very reason that they're unobtainable', although I won't fight her.
I hope his boyfriend (recently she went out with someone other) won't treat her like Shirou treated Saber.

Please don't base all your evidence on the anime. Because that's stupid. There's tons of material you'd have to read first in order to truly understand their characters. Fate/Zero and the actual Fate/Stay Night VN, for example.

You probably shouldn't use Zero to prove your point, because Zero contradicts it. In fact the pairing has actually picked up some more fans because of it. The reason Gilgamesh is attracted to her is specifically because she represents everything that humanity SHOULD be. He even tells Kirei as much after the Feast of Kings where he learned Saber's intentions: that he likes "arrogant opponents" who seek to become more than human, those who have a wish that is too great for a human to achieve. That is, in essence, what it means to be great enough to become a Heroic Spirit in Gil's eyes, since he is the first human to have done so. Humanity, to Gil, is at its best and most beautiful when it's struggling against impossible odds. That she refuses him is just an added bonus that reinforces his admiration of her strength (to resist even the King of Heroes) and purity (to refuse offers of infinite wealth).
There's really no love involved in it.
Zero contradicts this as well. It's stated that she is "the only woman he has ever truly loved". The problem is that he's buried his original nobility so thoroughly underneath layers of hedonism, tyranny, and materialism that what feelings he might have have been twisted into lust for her. Why he does this isn't clear, but what is apparent is that there is indeed some genuine affection, but it's perverted into lust due to his greed.
Sure, the pairing wouldn't happen in canon (since this is what was originally a porn game we're discussing, so the only one allowed to score any tail is the player avatar protagonist) but it's not all that unusual for such a dynamic, interesting pairing to earn some fans. (Especially those who are bored with the usual harem comedy shonentard main character crap) With a few tweaks and some overcoming of personal flaws/hangups, it might work in a different setting.
You should check out Carnival Phantasm episode 8. Gilgamesh must have a thing for being dominated...maybe that's a little overboard...let's say "bossed around" by Saber. Although you might not like the end of the episode very much, the Gilgamesh-Saber scenes are worth watching~

I swear the anime Fate/stay night would of been wayyyyyy better wifout him, my god... his idealistic logic of "saving everyone without sacrificing anyone" even archer got pissed off at himself lol ._. I totally support Saber x Gilgamesh, true dat gilgamesh can b a dick at times but hes like any other pampered prince who thinks hes the greatest but there usually is one person who teaches him about the value of life. -Gilgamesh does not truly love Saber as a man loves an equal. He loves her as an object to possess. He wants to control, belittle, and demean her for his own disgusting ego. It's also stated he flat-out wants to rape her.
-This coupling will never be consensual. Saber loathes him because he is so egocentric, sexist, and awful. There's a reason she loves Shirou: because he is a good, caring guy who repsects her.

I can't say I hate Saber x Shirou, because I think they don't match in one or another way, but still people have their own opinions, and favorite pairings so I will shut up my mouth. And to be honest, I did see more negative points from Shirou instead of his good points (despite his role as MC, Protagonist and goodwill), idk maybe I just dislike naive-and-pathetic-like character and Shirou does resemble all of it :P

Shirou is indeed a terrible pair with Saber, though his ideals were reasonable. Why wouldn't anyone want to save the world? But that's a child's view. When we get older, most people understand that we can't save everyone. Humanity can not be immortal. What would be worth living for if there weren't challenges ahead of us, whether they kill us or not. The world is both beautiful and ugly. The reason I do not like him very much is because he had no development. He was a child to begin with and a child to end with. An idea to be with his lover forever? Childish.
I do enjoy Gilgamesh and Saber. It was rather dynamic and exhilarating. I loved it because he didn't hold back. He fought her as if she may beat him. That is the best way to fight. He did see her as an item, but also as a conquest. Like a king would. He just didn't realize that his conquest was for her love. But in a way he probably still wanted to destroy her as he did his country. Let's just say he really didn't :)
I think GilgameshxSaber is waaayy better than SaberxShirou~~ especially when gil whispered to saber that he don't angry that he lose on her. Kyaaaaa~~~~ so romantic

It's September 2017 and I'm still salty why Shirou is the main character. Like wtf -_- he's lame and weak but arrogant af. I don't care he will be Archer. Because in the end he's a Gilgamesh copycat.

I've only started this series and I'm pretty addicted to it. I love the story and I'm also very interested in this argument. Well in my point of view, I kind of love their team up simply because its ironically dark and dramatic compared to ShirouXSaber, which I find a bit cliche. Gil's love in his own terms I'd say is "twisted". He loved seeing Saber in her destruction, I guess it really excites his bored nature. He loves her because she tries to attain the unattainable to the point of being ready to die just to achieve it. This stubborness is what also attracts Gil to her. He loves as she tries her hardest to achieve it and he loves how her ideals destroys her own self. He loves her brilliance, her unyielding strength in her beliefs and he loves her since he knows that despite it being a cursed and tragic path for her, she still strives for it. It is like an ultimate form of enjoyment for him, seeing her strive, struggle then get crushed, like a cycle repeating itself. He loved all of saber and her ironically strong and tragic self to the point obsession. Her rejection for him incites him even more, making him want to have her. The harder she tries to reject him, the harder he wants her more. It came to the point where he becomes very possesive of her, having claimed the right that she's only his and no one elses. He wants to claim sabers brilliance and wants to darken it himself. He wants to defile her purity (but not in a sexual way), and to be the one to taste her misery himself. But ofcourse, I love how Saber always refuses him, standing bright despite whatever he does. Its like seeing the strength of a woman I guess. Making her in the eyes of Gilgamesh as the unattainable and yet sweetest treasure of all. A love that he can never conquer will always stay the brightest in his eyes.

Gilgamesh openly admits to wanting to rape Saber ( while she is dying on the ground , bleeding out) he doesn’t even love her, the creator of the show said Gilgamesh would throw saber away as soon as he was done with her. How could you say this pairing works. You would have to rewrite Gilgamesh’s entire character. First up, in Zero he never says he loves her, his line is “ keep trying King if Knights, ......you might earn more of my love” and he walks away laughing evilly. He’s referring to loving Sabers pain and despair. This is reinforced later on by the line “ you shall experience great pain before you become mine” . Your point saying why he wants her is correct, but that’s it. Nasu himself said Gilgamesh would just throw her away once he was bored of her and that should she show any interest , or change in anyway, he would drop her. That isn’t love. You really shouldn’t play yourself like this by using Zero, which hints at the horrors he has planned for her in the fate route. And while the pairing may have gained followers from Zero, that doesn’t make it any less wrong, it’s a rape pairing simple as that. Gilgamesh’s exact line “ I suppose I’ll just take you now, you have been dirtied, but I suppose I’ll just take you now, it would have ended up like this either way” implying that he would most likely beat her before violating her, as fitting his real life mythology. There’s no defense against this pairing , plain and simple.

"The only woman he has ever truly loved" line from Fate Zero's light novels is absolute bs. Considering a lot of things from Urobuchi's novels gets retcon'd by Nasu later. Like Enkidu's death scene being different in tone than what you see in CCC and Babylonia. Along with what other anon comments are saying that Nasu has basically said Gil doesn't love her and that he'd toss her to the side when she gets bored. That is not love at all.
Nasu has also said in CCC materials that Gil refuses to love due to the inevitability of things coming to an end. So, a lot of Urobuchi's stuff about Gil is obsolete. Even still, it takes more than one brain cell to see that back in 2008 how absolutely loveless Gil's approach to Saber was even in the Deen anime. If someone doesn't want anything to do with the other, then the other should back off. That's what consent means and Saber didn't want anything to do with him, yet he kept going to the point of mangling her with Ea and threatening rape via grail mud.
Gil in the Fate route was forced to bend the knee to Saber and Shirou's love. He was shoe-horned into an eroge antagonist because Nasu couldn't figure out any way to put him in until UBW/HF. They needed an antagonist to come between Shirou and Saber. Combine that with them still wanting Gilgamesh vs. Arthur from Prototype somehow. Even in FZ, when Gil "proposes" to Saber, he already has weapons at the ready. He knew she was going to turn him down and he goes the extra mile to bully/threaten her. He doesn't care about her at all.
Go read/listen the CCC AR tapestry if you want Gil actually caring and being fully lusty in a consensual manner. And if you ship Gil and Saber together, just don't romanticize it and try to defend it as "lol so cute" like 80% of these comments are doing.

So... the way Gilgamesh appreciates Saber is the same way he appreciated his friend Enkidu. I never thought there was some genuine admiration in his "Saber obsession" until I've seen Fate/Zero...
Gilgamesh wants to see exceptional things, especially people who are trying to do impossible things and have the abilities to come very close to obtaining these dreams, those who defy gods/destiny, those who never give up no matter what. Enkidu, Saber, Hakuno happened to have one of the traits that Gil admires in humans.
To Gilgamesh who believes that seeking pleasure is the proof of one's humanity, seeing Saber actively avoid seeking her own happiness is quite unsettling and fascinating to him. The difference is that, unlike in his interaction with Kirei, he doesn't let Saber make her own decision.
Saber is someone who, in Iskandar's words, "discarded youthful romance and dreams, discarded love, and sunk into the eternal curse of ideals". Very very few men, if any, would be interested in a woman who didn't even have love/marriage on her list of priorities. Only Gilgamesh appreciates a woman like that. I would go for women like that, too, as oppose to those who have little dreams/ambitions and only speak the language of "romance".
Note that I'm not trying to romanticize the whole thing. Gilgamesh never truly loves Saber and is quite disrespectful toward her. The irony is that should Saber ever lose sight of her ideal, he will drop her instantly.
In all of that, it's just that this admiration he has for her and this part alone seems genuine.
